Benefits
V2G Liberty offers more than just cheaper charging. It is a complete solution that combines financial savings with sustainability, future security and full control.
Financial Savings
V2G Liberty users save €1,000 – €1,500 per year compared to a fixed contract without smart charging. This is not a marketing figure, but based on actual usage data over several years.
Het slimme laden leid tot:
- V2G Liberty users: average €0,09/kWh
- Contract with dynamic pricing (without V2G): average €0.29/kWh
- Permanent contract: around €0.40/kWh
Contract with dynamic pricing
V2G Liberty uses the dynamic contracts. Energy suppliers of such contracts base their tariffs on the EPEX Day-Ahead market, where electricity prices per quarter of an hour are set for the next day.
The “spread” – your savings opportunity:
The spread is the difference between expensive and cheap hours in a day:
- Cheapest hours: often €0.01 – €0.05/kWh (night, sunny days)
- Most expensive hours: can go up to €0.40 – €0.80/kWh (winter evenings, little wind/sun)
- Negative prices: are becoming more common – in 2024 about 150-200 hours per year where you are paid to take power

Important development: The average spread is still increasing due to the growing amount of wind and solar energy. More renewable energy means greater price fluctuations and therefore more savings potential.
V2G Liberty charges your car during the cheapest hours and can return energy during the most expensive hours. The bigger the spread, the more you save.
Your specific savings -a.o.- depend on:
- Battery capacity: Larger battery = more energy to trade with
- Charge power: Higher power = more flexibility in timing
- Driving behaviour: How often and when you need the car
- Energy contract: All dynamic contracts work, but price differences vary
Realistic example:
- Car: Nissan Leaf (59 kWh battery)
- Charger: Wallbox Quasar (5.6 kW bidirectional)
- Consumption: 15,000 km/year (≈ 2,500 kWh)
- Savings: €1,000-1,500/year compared to fixed contract + non-smart charging
Future Opportunities
The savings you realise now are just the beginning. New revenue streams will be added that make V2G even more attractive.
End of ‘saldering’ (NL)
From 1 January 2027, the netting scheme will disappear completely. This means that you can no longer settle 1-on-1 what you create with your own solar panels and what you take from the grid.
What does this mean?
- Without netting: solar power that you do not use directly gets much less value
- With V2G: your car becomes your home battery – storage of your own solar power for later use
- You maximise your own consumption without purchasing an expensive home battery
Dynamic network rates (NL)
Netbeheer Nederland is working on a new network tariff system with time-bound rates. Instead of a fixed amount per kWh for the electricity grid, the grid rates will vary per hour (concept)
FlexMeasures automatically processes both the dynamic energy prices and the time-bound network tariffs in one total price.
The ACM (Consumer & Market Authority) supports this proposal. Implementation is expected in 2026-2027, but details are still to be finalised. V2G Liberty is ready for this.
ERE-certificats (NL)
On 1 January 2026, the Netherlands introduced ERE certificates (Emission Reduction Units), this system rewards CO2 reduction in the mobility sector.
How it works:
- Every kWh you charge electrically avoids CO₂-emissions
- This results in ERE certificates that you can sell to oil companies
- Estimated value: €0.07-0.15 per kWh loaded
V2G currently excluded: The current regulation of the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) only recognises one-way charging. Bidirectional charging is not yet covered by this, despite the fact that V2G saves the same or more CO₂ net.
There are pleas for adjustment of the regulations, but there is no certainty whether this will continue. If EREs also apply to V2G in the future, this could yield up to €300-500 extra per year. V2G Liberty will support this as soon as the regulations allow it.
Greener and More Sustainable
V2G is not only good for your wallet, but also for the climate and the energy transition.
Supports the energy transition
The electricity grid is becoming increasingly “green” due to wind and solar energy, but these sources are erratic:
- Sunny weekend? Too much supply, prices fall (sometimes negative)
- Cold winter evening without wind? Shortage, gas power plants need to help
V2G helps solve this:
- Better balance supply and demand
- Less peaks on the network = less network expansion needed
- Less fossil backup capacity required
By smartly loading and returning, you help make investments in green energy projects viable. Wind farms and solar meadows become more profitable if there is flexible demand that can absorb their production peaks.
Maximise your own consumption of solar panels
Do you have solar panels? V2G is the smartest way to utilise your own green electricity:
Without V2G (after end of settlement):
- During the day: overproduction → sale at low prices (€0.05/kWh)
- Evening: purchase → buy at high prices (€0.35/kWh)
- Net loss: €0.30/kWh difference
With V2G:
- During the day: charging car with own solar power
- In the evening: use that electricity in the house or keep it in the car
- Net profit: up to 95% own consumption instead of 30-40%
No (large) home battery needed
A 10-15 kWh home battery costs €7,000-12,000. The production of such a battery requires significant raw materials, energy for manufacturing, and CO2 emissions are involved. Your car has a 50-80 kWh battery that you already have and use while driving.
Your car battery does double work: mobility and energy storage.
Control
Automation is only valuable if you remain the boss. V2G Liberty gives you full control.
Simple app, powerful automation
The V2G Liberty app (via Home Assistant) combines:
- Immediate intervention: Always possible to pause automatic loading and start immediate loading
- Automatic optimisation: FlexMeasures algorithms calculate when loading/discharging is most advantageous
- Your calendar: Reserve your car via Google Calendar, iCloud or Nextcloud – an appointment with your departure time is sufficient
Setting boundaries the way you want
Full control means that you set the rules:
- Charging limits: For example 20-80% to optimise battery
- Maximum power: Limit charging speed if your electrical installation requires it
Transparency & insight
You always know what’s happening:
- Live dashboard with current prices, charging status, SoC
- Historical data: total savings, kWh loaded/returned
- Notifications at important events (loading session starts, car full, price peak)
No black box: Open source software means you can see exactly why the system makes certain choices.
